The newest Apple operating software, OS X High Sierra, will be arriving this autumn. However, an open public beta is already available.
The usual conditions apply — if you download the beta, expect a few third-party programs to work poorly at first. Be sure to back up your hard drive before you do anything and consider putting it on a Mac that isn't your primary computer.
Here are some tips to get the most out of the new software:
Snap windows to either side of the screen
Computers are typically great at multi-tasking, but it's easy to lose track of the live windows. You can now have two programs open at the same time in the equivalent of full-screen view.
Each one harbors half the display, although you are free to adjust the proportions of the windows. Just click and hold one window by the green full-screen button at the top left of each window and its shape will morph to show that it's ready to be snapped. Drag it to the top of the screen and it'll drop down on the left half. Then simply click on another program and it'll automatically inflate to fill the other half of the screen.
Both will continue to be live and accessible. Click the full-screen button again and they'll revert into separate windows.
Swipe to delete emails
Like the mechanics for Mail on the iPhone among other apps, this feature is simple and efficient. You can swipe across the trackpad with two fingers toward the left and the email is deleted. Swipe right to mark the message as "unread." Swipe right once more and the message is marked as "read" again.
