An Apple television set has been on the wishlist for many company enthusiasts for some time. It is a rumor that pops up before every Apple press event but continues to be left on the cutting room floor.
According to a recent article from Investor's Business Daily, an Apple television could be on the horizon and the proof is in what the company hasn't done. The piece points to the new, highly redesigned Mac Pro as the evidence.
One of the major features of the new powerhouse computer is the ability to edit ultra-high definition 4K video. However, Apple does not offer a 4K display to actually view this on. On top of that, the company last updated its line-up in July of 2011 when the 27-inch Thunderbolt Display was introduced.
A monitor is required for a Mac Pro to be used in a Mac integration. For Apple not to release one that can optimize the system is like an automobile manufacturer putting out a car that doesn't have tires.
Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, told the news source that the lack of a 4K monitor from Apple is "quite curious."
"It's pretty obvious that (a 4K display) would be something that they would do," Munster told the news source. "Apple historically has gotten sizable profit margins on its monitors. There's something bigger going on because Apple wouldn't want to miss out on profits from selling new computer monitors."
Could this mean a new breed of displays and the iTV are finally arriving? Only time will tell.
