On June 29, 1975, Apple's first computer came to life. At the time, Apple Computers didn't quite exist yet, but the prototype Steve "Woz" Wozniak began testing that year would eventually become the company's first product: the Apple I.
To celebrate, here are 3 facts you may not have known about Apple's first computer:
- It sold for $666.66: The reasons for the peculiar price tag were twofold. One one hand, Steve Jobs sold the computers wholesale for $500, making $666.67 an easy one-third markup. On the other, Woz was "into repeating digits," especially because they were easier to type, CNET reported.
- It could have become an HP computer: When Woz first designed the Apple I, he was in the habit of giving his designs away for free. Woz offered the idea to Hewlett-Packard, where he was working at the time. However, the company rejected the design not once, but five times, Apple Insider reported. Jobs eventually convinced Wozniak to start his own company to sell the product.
- It was first shown to Silicon Valley's Homebrew Computer Club: Wozniak had attended the hobby group's inaugural meeting, which reportedly sparked his interest in creating personal computers of his own. When Woz completed the Apple I in July 1976, he headed back to the club to give the first demonstration, reported British Telecom.
