When icons on your Mac’s desktop are scattered about, or maybe piled on top of one another, it can be difficult to locate anything. For most people, an easy solution exists: sorting the desktop’s contents.
To do so, in the Finder, choose View > Show View Options. We recommend choosing Date Modified from the Sort By pop-up menu to put your most recently used files in the upper right of your screen—but other criteria may work better for you. To collect icons into stacks by date, you can choose Date Modified from the Stack By pop-up menu. And if you have so many icons that they overlap, try reducing the icon size and/or grid spacing.
